Nickel, element 28 of the periodic table, is a durable, malleable, shiny metal with a crystalline cubic structure in a white and silver color. It is the fifth most abundant element on Earth and is widely found in the Earth’s crust and core. Today, nickel has gained special value, particularly in the alloy industry. Nearly 68% of the nickel produced globally is used to manufacture stainless steels. It is also among toxic metals whose entry into the food chain has significantly increased with rising environmental pollution.

High concentrations of nickel are considered a stress factor for plants, which can act as a growth-limiting agent, affecting physiological and biochemical properties of plants. Nickel is a metal with extraordinary chemical and physical properties that make it used in hundreds of thousands of different applications. The most common oxidation state of nickel is 2+, although 3+ and 1+ nickel are also rarely seen.

Nickel Production

Nickel ores are divided into two categories: sulfide and oxide. Sulfide ore accounts for two-thirds of the world’s consumption. Sulfide ores are refined to nickel oxide using flotation and purification. Nickel oxide is also refined through hydrometallurgy methods such as ammonia leaching. Roasted sulfide ore is melted in a blast furnace along with limestone, quartz, and coal. Then, the mixture of nickel and copper sulfide condenses at the bottom and after heat treatment in a converter, metallic nickel is obtained through repeated melting and electrolysis.

Nickel is a bright white-gray metal that is malleable. In combinations, it exists as sulfide and silicate rocks. Due to the slow oxidation rate of nickel at room temperature, it is resistant to corrosion. Nickel is one of the four main ferromagnetic elements at room temperature. Adding nickel to steel increases its density and hardness. It also enhances steel’s resistance to oxidation and corrosion, and improves wear resistance.
