Magnesium ingots contain magnesium, an alkaline earth metal that is the eighth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust (about 2.5% by weight). The element magnesium, with the chemical symbol Mg and atomic number 12, is a silver-colored metal. It is located in group 2 of the periodic table (alkaline earth metals group) and period 3, and is situated in the s-block of the table. The melting point of magnesium is 650 degrees Celsius, and the boiling point is 1100 degrees Celsius.
Magnesium is the lightest industrial metal with unique metallurgical properties. With a density of 7.1 grams per cubic centimeter, magnesium is the lightest metal used for producing industrial equipment. Magnesium is extracted from mineral ores such as dolomite, magnesite (oxide), chrysolite, serpentine, brucite, and talc.
Production of Magnesium Ingots
Today, electrolytic and thermal reduction methods are used to produce magnesium ingots. However, the thermal reduction method is more common and widely used than the electrolytic method. Currently, the most stable technology for the reduction thermal process, known as the Pidgeon process, is owned by China, which is recognized as the largest producer of magnesium ingots.
The Pidgeon process is known as the most powerful method for producing this light metal on a commercial and industrial scale and is almost exclusively owned by Chinese companies. This method requires dolomite as a raw material, which is abundant in China, so the magnesium ingot production in this country is carried out using the thermal reduction method.
This production method is less costly for producers compared to the electrolytic method and requires less time to produce the final product, which makes Chinese magnesium cheaper than German magnesium ingots and other imported products. Magnesium is also used as a catalyst and increases the efficiency of many reactions. Magnesium alloy is about 40% lighter than aluminum alloy, about 70% lighter than zinc alloy, and 77% lighter than steel alloy, while the production cost is approximately 30% less than that of aluminum alloy.
