Indium

Indium is a shiny silver metal that is very soft and flexible, so much that it can easily be scratched with a nail and bent into almost any shape. In nature, indium is very rare and almost always found as a trace element in other minerals, especially in zinc and lead, and is usually obtained as a byproduct of these metals. Its estimated abundance in the Earth’s crust is 0.1 parts per million (ppm), slightly more than silver or mercury.

The melting point of this product is very low, approximately 313.9°F (156.6°C). Above this temperature, it burns with a violet or indigo flame. The name indium comes from the brilliant indigo light it displays in a spectrometer. Indium metal is very soft, malleable, and ductile. In other words, indium is the softest metal that is not categorized as an alkali metal.

This metal can be cut with a knife and has a shiny surface. It can also be easily scratched with a nail and bent into any shape. This element does not react with water, though it can be oxidized by stronger oxidizers like halogens. Its available forms are usually as ingots and granules.
