High Sulfur Graphite

High sulfur graphite (granular graphite or high sulfur graphite) is a carbon-containing compound derived from calcined petroleum-based material known as RPC, Row Petroleum Coke. It is a type of synthetic graphite added to the melt for carbonization. The difference in carbon emissions in coal and petroleum coke per unit energy depends on two parameters: volatile hydrocarbons and moisture content in the coal.

Petroleum coke contains over 90% carbon. High sulfur graphite is black-gray in color and appears granular and porous. The most common applications of high sulfur graphite are in the production of cast iron parts and gray iron ingots, aluminum manufacturing, anode industries, refractory materials, and slag formation in electric arc furnaces.

High sulfur graphite has a higher calorific value compared to metallurgical coke, and its ash content is also lower. Therefore, the carbon absorption rate of high sulfur graphite is much higher than that of metallurgical coke.

Production of High Sulfur Graphite

High sulfur graphite is calcined in production kilns using rotary horizontal or vertical shaft technology. This process aims to remove moisture, volatiles, increase coke density, improve properties and physical strength, and enhance electrical conductivity in rotary crucible kilns. The kiln temperature ranges between 1200 to 1350 degrees Celsius. Subsequently, green coke or raw petroleum coke is formed inside the kiln.

This process results in a denser and more crystalline final product. Then, the kiln temperature is reduced by approximately 1100 degrees, and ultimately, high sulfur graphite is prepared. This graphite is transported to silos and storage warehouses using specialized equipment and machinery or loaded into the holds and tanks of ships and trucks for export destinations.
