Ferro Titanium, which belongs to the ferroalloy family, is produced from the combination of iron (10-20%) and titanium (45-75%) with a minimal amount of carbon. This ferroalloy is used as a deoxidizer in steel manufacturing and reacts with nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, and sulfur, removing them into the slag. Its main applications include deoxidation and desulfurization, as well as acting as a degasser. This ferroalloy has low density and high strength, and is highly resistant to corrosion.
Ferro Titanium is one of the most effective and widely used ferroalloys in the steel industry. Typically used as a 60-70% alloy with a low melting point in steelmaking, Ferro Titanium extraction is carried out from titanium and iron scraps at a melting point of about 1100 degrees Celsius. It is noteworthy that titanium and iron melt at approximately 1650 degrees Celsius, so this ferroalloy comprises a small percentage of the mixture that ultimately dissolves rapidly in the melt.
Ferro Titanium Production
To produce Ferro Titanium materials, raw materials such as ilmenite, perovskite, and slag concentrates are used. Also, for making high-percentage titanium, titanium scrap is used, with ferrosilicon-titanium sometimes being utilized. These materials are also used as grain refiners in steelmaking. The use of titanium in steel allows for easier ignition, and its ignition is accompanied by a bright light.
Today, Ferro Titanium is often produced by melting titanium scrap with iron in induction furnaces. In this method, the materials are heated in induction and electric arc furnaces to about 1100 degrees Celsius, and then the molten materials are mixed together. Sometimes aluminothermic reduction is used to produce Ferro Titanium, resulting in a product containing titanium, aluminum, and iron.
The primary pricing of Ferro Titanium is based on its titanium percentage, as the most important application of titanium is the removal of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen from steel, and it must contain minimal amounts of these elements.
Production of Ferro Titanium using the carbothermic method results in a higher carbon content in this alloy. This is because the main application of Ferro Titanium is for combining with molten carbon, and the presence of carbon in Ferro Titanium is undesirable. Hence, this production method is rarely used today. The main grades of Ferro Titanium are FeTi 35 and FeTi 70. The 35% grade is produced from ilmenite, and the 70% grade is produced through melting titanium scrap in a furnace.

Properties of Ferro Titanium Materials
The titanium present in Ferro Titanium has the ability to combine with nitrogen and can lead to the formation of solutions like TiN. These solutions can be purged by nitrogen. Due to this product’s tendency to react with the aforementioned elements, it can reduce their harmful effects by stabilizing or eliminating them in the melt.
The notable properties of Ferro Titanium include low density, high strength, and good corrosion resistance.
Other properties of Ferro Titanium are:
- Their appearance is like lumps.
- Ferro Titanium has a silver-gray color.
- Ferro Titanium is odorless.
- The melting temperature of Ferro Titanium is between 975 and 1500 degrees.
- Ferro Titanium has a density of 5.6 to 6.8 grams per cubic centimeter.
