Ferrosilicon manganese is a type of ferroalloy that includes 60 to 68 percent manganese, 14 to 21 percent silicon, and 2.5 percent carbon. This material is produced by melting slag from high-carbon ferromanganese or manganese ore along with coke and quartz. This ferroalloy can be used as a substitute for ferrosilicon and ferromanganese in deoxidation during steel production. It is used with high silica purity of over 30 percent in the production of stainless steel. Oxidation with ferrosilicon manganese results in cleaner steel because liquid manganese silicate coagulates and is more easily separated from the melt.

One of the most important applications of using ferrosilicon manganese is that it adds fewer impurity elements such as carbon, phosphorus, and nitrogen to steel compared to other ferroalloys. Computational fluid dynamics calculations also show that silicon uptake through Si-Mn is greater than through Fe-Si.

Production of Ferrosilicon Manganese

This ferroalloy is actually a combination of ferromanganese and ferrosilicon, and furnaces used for high-carbon ferromanganese production are used to make it. The production process of this ferroalloy is more challenging than ferromanganese production due to the presence of silicon in its composition. The most important element of ferrosilicon manganese is manganese.

In the production process of ferrosilicon manganese, these raw materials are directed into an electric arc furnace and are subject to heat and high temperature. It should be noted that one of the most critical requirements for producing ferrosilicon manganese is extremely high temperature and heat, and its production is more difficult compared to other ferroalloys. In other words, to obtain the necessary silicon, much higher temperatures are needed in ferrosilicon manganese production, making it harder to produce than other types of ferroalloys.

Applications

  • Reducing carbon solubility in various steels
  • Deoxidizing in steels
  • Improving the resilience and hardness of steel
  • Reducing impurities such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur in various alloys including steel

Features of Ferrosilicon Manganese

  • Ferrosilicon manganese has a density of 1.6 grams per cubic centimeter and its melting point depends on its chemical composition, typically ranging from 1060 to 1350 degrees.
  • It is insoluble in water, alcohol, and oil.
  • It is available in metallic lumps with a silver gray appearance and is an odorless solid.
  • Due to having the common properties of ferromanganese and ferrosilicon, ferrosilicon manganese has become a highly important and economically viable ferroalloy.
  • Producing cleaner steel with high purity.
  • Ferrosilicon manganese is produced in both low-carbon and high-carbon forms.
