Ferroboron is an alloy formed from the combination of iron and boron, mainly used in the metallurgical industries as an iron alloy. This alloy must contain a small amount of carbon. In one of the high-quality types of this alloy, silicon is used as a reducing agent to prevent the entry of carbon and allow for easy removal of heavy metals associated with boron.
Ferroboron is produced in several different grades; however, the two more common examples include ferroborons with 10% boron and 17% boron. This alloy is mainly added to steel to create a steel with high strength and resistance for various applications. This product is also available in powder form, making it easy to combine into different alloy production processes.
The use of ferroboron as an additive in steel production may be limited due to its relatively high cost; however, it is still regarded as one of the most useful ferroalloys. Ferroboron is in lump form, with a color that is silver-gray. Its melting temperature is above 1500 degrees Celsius, and its density is 3.3 grams per cubic centimeter.

Ferroboron Production
Ferroboron alloy is usually produced as small pieces or very fine powders and is packaged in 50 kg, 100 kg, or even 1000 kg packs and marketed. Ferroboron was first made in 1893 by Henri Moissan using a single-phase electric arc furnace with carbon lining. Today, the commercial production of this ferroalloy is achieved by two primary processes: carbothermic reaction and aluminothermic reaction.
Carbothermic Production of Ferroboron:
In this method, raw materials are fed into an electric arc furnace, including boric acid, carbon, and iron powder. In this method, a boron alloy is required that has low carbon and high boron content. This process is carried out in an arc furnace with a capacity of 1500 kilowatts.
Aluminothermic Production of Ferroboron:
In this method, ferroboron is produced by reducing boric acid and iron oxide with aluminum powder. The presence of a certain amount of magnesium in the aluminothermic composition is beneficial, and aluminum has a higher reduction property at boiling temperatures. This process requires little energy for the reaction chain to occur spontaneously.
Benefits of Ferroboron
Adding ferroboron to the metallic glass production process offers numerous advantages. One of the main benefits of adding ferroboron to alloys is the increase in magnetic sensitivity. Specifically, ferroboron can significantly increase the magnetic sensitivity of the final alloy, making the related alloy ideal for the production of Nd-Fe-B magnets. This ferroalloy also greatly enhances the alloy’s resistance to leaching.
Another advanced application of ferroboron is in the production of magnetic glasses. Ferroboron increases the stability and strength of steel products, plays a very important role in the mechanical behavior and quenching of steel, and enhances steel’s resistance to corrosion.
Other applications of ferroboron include:
– Use in the steel and steel industries
– Use in satellites to increase wear resistance
– Production of low-carbon rebar
– Use in the manufacture of ceramics and metals
– Construction of car sheets
– Production of Nd-Ee-B magnets
