Fatty graphite is a crystalline structure, a semi-metal, and one of the three allotropes of carbon. The greatest range of graphite usage is in the steel and cast iron production industries, and it can be said that carbon is an inseparable element in the structure of steel and cast iron, which imparts different properties to these materials at any percentage in the molten iron and steel. The use of fatty graphite in the metallurgy industry has a very wide range, including:
– Increasing the hardness of steel by adding graphite
– Production of industrial electrodes with petroleum coke
– Recovery of steel and metal oxides using carbon oxidation in the form of metallurgical coke
– Production of thermal coal, coke, graphite, etc.
Fatty graphite is a conductor of electric current and is considered the most stable form of carbon under standard conditions. This material has the highest natural resistance and hardness, is rust-resistant and heat-resistant, has high natural lubricity, and high thermal resistance up to 4500 degrees Fahrenheit (2480 degrees Celsius). It is electrically and thermally conductive, has chemical stability, radiation shielding capability, low friction, and high compressive strength.
Production of Fatty Graphite
The synthetic graphite production process was invented by Edward Goodrich Acheson. In the mid-1890s, Acheson discovered that overheated carborundum resulted in graphite formation, which he later identified as significantly valuable. While studying the effects of high temperatures on carborundum, he also found that silicon evaporates at about 4150 degrees Celsius (7500 degrees Fahrenheit), leaving behind graphitic carbon.
This graphite was another significant discovery for him as a valuable and useful lubricant. Fatty graphite is one of the natural forms of graphite, appearing as a black-gray powder with a crystalline appearance and slightly greasy and shiny when rubbed between two fingers, covering the skin’s contact surface. Important features of fatty graphite include low density, high resistance, electrical and thermal conductivity, and inertness against all acids.
The application of fatty graphite in the industry is undeniable, with over 150 different uses; it is classified as a critical resource. Other applications include:
- Lithium battery structure
- Pencils
- Fuel cells
- Composites
- Brake pads
- Foundry industry
- Paint manufacturing
- Lubrication
- Nuclear reactors
- Resin production
- Electricity industry
- Metallurgy industry
- Energy storage
- Insulation
- and more…
