Cobalt

Cobalt is a chemical element with atomic number 27 and symbol Co. It is found in the Earth’s crust only in chemical combination. Free cobalt is produced by reductive smelting, which gives a hard, lustrous silver-gray metal. This ferromagnetic metal with a specific gravity of 8.9 is protected from oxidation by a passive oxide film. Cobalt is attacked by halogens and sulfur. Heating in oxygen produces Co3O4, which loses oxygen at 900 degrees Celsius to yield cobalt monoxide Co. This metal reacts with fluorine at 520 Kelvin, producing CoF3. It forms binary halides with chlorine (Cl2), bromine (Br2), and iodine (I2).
