Chrome metal is a silver, shiny, and hard metal with extensive applications as a catalyst or additive in alloys. It is primarily used in the production of special alloys, nickel, and cobalt-based superalloys where low iron content is required. Additionally, chrome metal powder is used in the production of welding electrodes and barbed wires.

Due to its unique properties at high temperatures and resistance to corrosion, these high-performance alloys are used in critical environments such as aerospace, oil and gas production, land-based turbines, petrochemicals, and chemical products. Standard purity grades of chrome metal range from 99.4% to 99% with higher grades available at around 99.8% to 99.6%. Its forms include lump, powder, shot, chip, and cube.

Production of Chrome Metal

Chrome metal production is carried out by two methods: one through the aluminothermic process from chromium oxide (reduction of oxide with aluminum) and the other by the electrolytic process using ferrochrome or chromic acid. Chrome metal extraction is done by reducing Cr2O3 or the electrolysis of trivalent Cr solutions. This metal can also be obtained by the electrolysis of tetravalent Cr solutions, but this process is less efficient and is primarily used for plating.
