Lead is a soft, pliable, and malleable metal considered to be a heavy metal. It is present in the Earth’s crust at a concentration of 14 ppm. The primary source of this metal is the ore galena, lead(II) sulfide (PbS), which appears as gray cubic crystals. Lead powder readily oxidizes in moist air, is stable against oxygen and water, but dissolves in nitric acid.

This powder is a poor conductor of electricity and heat but has suitable corrosion resistance. The applications of this metal powder are wide and varied. For example, its relative impermeability to radiation makes it an ideal radiation shielding material for use with X-ray equipment. This powder is also used in ceramic glazes, batteries, paints, as well as a fuel additive in gasoline (tetraethyl lead), and as a main component of soft solders.

Lead ingot comes in various forms like balls, bars, and blocks tailored to specific applications in construction, marine industries, aerospace, and other industries. Lead ingots can be produced as alloys with antimony and tin with specific characteristics. Lead ingots contain approximately 99-97% lead metal with remaining impurity elements like antimony, tin, arsenic, iron, and copper.

Production of Lead Ingot

Lead ingots are remelted and used to produce pure lead through the process of pyrometallurgical extraction. Pure lead ingots have higher purity than remelted lead ingots. After the refining process is complete, the molten lead is typically pumped or utilized at an adjusted casting rate.
