Ferrophosphorus

Ferrophosphorus is produced from iron and phosphorus. This ferroalloy contains a high percentage of iron phosphide, Fe2P, and Fe3P. Typical grades of ferrophosphorus contain 18 to 25 percent phosphorus. This solid grey material has a melting point between 1050-1100 degrees Celsius. In metallurgy, ferrophosphorus is used as a source of phosphorus for alloying, deoxidizing melts, and removing unwanted compounds. Process parameters must be strictly controlled to prevent phosphorus segregation at grain boundaries, which might lead to excessive brittleness. Ferrophosphorus improves machinability and strength in low-carbon steel. By adding 0.011 to 0.085 weight percent phosphorus to ferritic low-carbon steels, an increase in phosphorus content results in reduced grain size, increased yield strength, higher ultimate tensile strength, increased intergranular and intragranular hardness, and limited changes in relative elongation.

Ferrophosphorus acts as a drying agent for alloys. Adding ferrophosphorus to alloys prevents any rusting and in the production of cast iron parts, it also enhances the machinability of gray cast iron parts.
