Ferro silicon zirconium includes zirconium, one of the elements that reacts well with nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and carbon, forming stable compounds. This element is used as a deoxidizer for correcting non-metallic components and also stabilizing uncombined nitrogen in boron steels.

Ferro silicon zirconium is an alloy of iron, zirconium, and silicon produced by the direct reduction of zircon sands in electric arc furnaces at high temperatures. This ferroalloy is used as a zirconium-containing additive in steel melts that reacts with sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen. The use of zirconium as an additive in the steelmaking industry has been practiced for more than 40 years.

Production of Ferro Silicon Zirconium

Zirconium quickly dissolves in the molten steel bath and reacts successively with oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Therefore, using zirconium in steels with a sulfur content of 0.02 percent or more is economically more viable. For greater effectiveness, the amount of zirconium to be added should depend more on the nitrogen and oxygen content rather than the sulfur content.

To increase zirconium recovery, it is recommended to add zirconium after adding aluminum and calcium to the solution. Ferro silicon zirconium is used for removing impurities such as oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur or modifying inclusions through forming complex sulfides and oxides. Zirconium sulfide (ZrS) is more stable compared to manganese sulfide (MnS) and helps in avoiding the formation of long and flat streaks in hot rolled sheets and strips.

Zirconium additives in steel improve weldability and enhance mechanical properties and hardness. In high-alloy steels, zirconium can increase strength and hardness but reduce ductility. In stainless steels, zirconium can delay the formation of undesirable phases like sigma phase.
