Ferro, used as a prefix in the names of ferroalloys, means iron, and when combined with chrome, it forms ferrochrome (FeCr). The main difference between chrome and ferrochrome is the iron present in ferrochrome. The proportion of chromium in high carbon ferrochrome can range from 50 to 70%.
Chromium is one of the hardest materials in the world and is not found freely in nature. Besides these two main alloying elements, various amounts of carbon (C) and other elements such as silicon (Si), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) are also present in this alloy. The raw material for producing high carbon ferrochrome is chromite. The major important uses of chromite are in refractory, metallurgy, and chemical industries. The purity of chromite used in casting and chemical industries is high; however, it can be lower in refractories. The most extensive use of chromium is in stainless steel. To produce ferrochrome, the metallic chromite ore is placed in smelting furnaces to produce ferrochrome.
